Mindfulness
Mindfullness - A Good Focus but nothing New.
There is a new focus created by the word-construct called ‘Mindfulness’. In essence it is a focus on empathy and having a feeling for what others are going through at different stages of their lives. There is nothing particularly new in that. At the very heart of the Christian faith is a call to empathy with others and how we treat one another. Referring to the judgement day of God we are reminded that what we have done to others we have also done to God Himself. (Matthew 25:40) We are advised to take the log from our own eye before we pick on the mote in the eyes of others. (Matthew 7:1-5). The parable of the good Samaritan points us to caring for those who dislike us and despise us. This is not an easy request. (Luke 10:25-37)
In short, empathy has to be at the heart of our relationship with God and with others. That empathy also requires that we treat ourselves with that same kindness. Before we can truly love our brothers and sisters we must learn to love ourselves. Seeking the best for ourselves never comes at the expense of others however.
There are those for whom this message is impossible to accept however. At the extreme points of human personality we have narcissism and psychopathy. Here the human mind is incapable of empathy. We must assist and engage in such situations even where it is not appreciated and where therapy and medical intervention is required. Just because others cannot accept the need for empathy does not exclude us from our responsibility towards them.
Mindfulness therefore is nothing new but it’s focus is continually helpful.
